So a few weeks ago we had a Living Scriptures salesman come to our door. I must admit we were charmed and agreed to purchase from him. If you have ever affiliated with Living Scriptures you know that you can't just purchase one or two movies...you have to agree to purchase them all over a three year period...at $37.50 a month (for one DVD and one workbook).
The salesman was very persuasive and made us feel like we were some sort of horrible parents if our kids knew Disney characters better than people from the scriptures. I thought it would be a good idea to bring the spirit into our home.
The problem: I don't know if it is really wise to be paying out $37.50 a month for ONE DVD. Our budget is already pretty much tight and we are now adding a new home and a new baby into the mix. My dad has always told me, "If you don't think you can afford it, don't get it. You'll be a lot happier."
My only hang up is, would I regret cancelling it? Have any of you had any experience with The Living Scriptures? Is it really worth all the money, like they tell you it is? Jeff and I have talked about it and we feel like we are already really selective about what our children watch and we have children's books about the scriptures. Plus, in all we will be getting 36 DVD's...do the kids really need to watch that many of them? We'd rather have them out running and enjoying the sunshine. I feel like we can create a spiritual atmosphere in our home with out more movies. However, exposing our children to the scriptures through TV can be a positive thing.
So I need your opinions!!! What do you think would be the wise thing to do here: get the movies or cancel our order?

Sarah - you haven't a clue who I am... Audra McKinnon's Mom. lol I've felt the guilt on not getting all the living scriptures when my big kids were young too. They are wonderfully done and are interesting for children. HOWEVER. :D The church also teaches us to be wise stewards of our money. If money's already tight - later might be a better time. :) (I said that years ago & we still don't have them) I did find some of those & similar video's at our local library. You might check that out as an option. :) You have a beautiful little family! Enjoy!

My kids love the living scriptures!! We have never bought them but we watch the ones that my mom bought a long time ago. I have seen them on e-bay for cheaper. But my kids do love to watch them.
I don't think it is worth it. My mom did the living scriptures and has all of the dvd's. While they are cute and great at teaching your kids, there are also other ways to go about it. I don't think $37.50 a month is worth it.
We have also came in contact with the living scriptures guilt trip. It was something that we thought would be good for our boys but it is so expensive! We thought about it alot and decided not to do it. Shortly after I was able to find the whole collection from the Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon(well at least most of them) at the D.I. for a dollar a piece! So I would suggest if you really want them, to look else where! Peter loves them and they have really helped him know the scripture stories!
cancel!! you can get them so much cheaper, check the DI or ebay. my parents have the whole set and the grand kids never watch them. Also the VHS quality of picture is Better then the DVD picture. would you pay $40 for a normal dvd? I wouldn't.
Sarah, Its okay to cancel. You are an amazing person and when I have been in your home the spirit is ever so present. You already know how to have the spirit in your home without these videos. :) The church has really good family videos. I loved watching "Mr. Krueger's Christmas", "Mt. of the Lord", "Nora's Christmas Carol" and so on growing up! :) That's really silly that they are trying to sell a product through guilt. Unfortunately its a common practice. To me they really aren't selling the scripture characters, they are still fictionalized through cartoon. I've had Deseret call me about picking the right movies for my family and trying to sign me up for a program. They had me until they wanted to sell me Singles ward, God's Army, etc. Which I find inappropriate. Anyways, i should get off my soap box! :) Do what's right by your family! :) I sure miss you Sarah!
